Nunsensations

NunsensationsNUNSENSATIONS! The Nunsense Vegas Revue takes the sisters on a brand new adventure. When a parishioner volunteers to donate $10,000 to the sisters’ school if they will perform in a club in Las Vegas, Mother Superior is hesistant to accept. However, after being convinced by the other sisters that “what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas” Reverend Mother agrees.

What follows is the most feather-filled, sequin-studded, fan dancing Nunsense show ever! Performing in “The Pump Room” at the Mystique Motor Lodge, the sisters experience “show-biz” like never before. You’ll meet Sin-City Sue, find out who’s Black and White with Her Money on Red, and try to win a new car with the “Holy Rollers Giant Slot Machine.” Taking a line from another show, a critic pointed out, “It’s a whole lot funny and a little bit naughty, but there ain’t nothin’ dirty goin’ on!”

NUNSENSATIONS! is the sixth show in Dan Goggin’s series of NUNSENSE shows.

Banjo virtuoso Béla Fleck joins forces with amazing African musicians to bring you a once in a lifetime musical experience.

Béla Fleck is often considered the premier banjo player in the world. A New York City native, he picked up the banjo at age 15 after being awed by the bluegrass music of Flatt & Scruggs. While still in high school he began experimenting with playing bebop jazz on his banjo, mentored by fellow banjo renegade Tony Trischka. In 1980, he released his first solo album, Crossing the Tracks, with material that ranged from straight ahead bluegrass to Chick Corea’s “Spain.” In 1982, Fleck joined the progressive bluegrass band New Grass Revival, making a name for himself on countless solo and ensemble projects ever since as a virtuoso instrumentalist. In 1989 he formed the genre-busting Flecktones, with members equally talented and adventurous as himself.

Africa ProjectThrow Down Your Heart, the third volume in Béla’s renowned Tales From the Acoustic Planet series, is his most ambitious project to date. In on-location collaborations with musicians from Uganda, Tanzania, Senegal, Mali, South Africa and Madagascar, Béla Fleck explores the African origins of the banjo, the prototype of which was brought to American shores by African slaves. Throw Down Your Heart is a companion to the award-winning film of the same name, which Béla and director Sascha Paladino are currently premiering at festivals nationwide. Transcending barriers of language and culture, Fleck finds common ground with musicians ranging from local villagers to international superstars such as the Malian diva Oumou Sangare to create some of the most meaningful music of his career.

For his performance at the Waterville Opera House, Béla will be joined by:

BASSEKOU kOUYATE (Mali) is one of the true masters of the ngoni, the ancient forerunner of the banjo found throughout West Africa. The name of his stellar band, NGONI BAS, translates as "big Ngoni." although after this tour of the Africa Project another translation might be "big banjo." The repertoire they play is from the region of Segu, the heart of Bambara culture. Unlike Mandinka griot music, Bambara music is as close to the blues as you can get in Africa.

ANANIA NGOLIGA (Tanzania) is a blind multi-instrumentalist and singer, for The Africa Project he plays the Wagogo thumb piano, a deep-toned instrument called ilimba. Wagogo traditional music has a distinctively mysterious scale. His performances with Béla Fleck were called "the spiritual high point of the program," by BANNING EYRE of Afropop Worldwide.

JOHN KITIME (Tanzania) is a guitarist and singer who has led the acclaimed kilimanjaro band for over 30 years. john is also the head of the Tanzanian Musician's Union with a deep knowledge of the history of Tanzanian music. For this reason, Béla tapped him to serve as the field producer for the award-winning film, THROW DOWN YOUR HEART; the inspiration for this tour
